What makes sense for the Knicks?

For the Knicks, it is important to consider roster needs, the path to a championship, overall fit and the expected value from any player they sign.

We also expect the Knicks to make a significant trade, that will require a major consolidation of the current roster. Since much of the young talent in New York has been dealt, think Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett with Quentin Grimes soon to follow, we might see a major need for the Knicks at point guard.

The Knicks have done a tremendous job in recent times building a strong culture. A culture that was once mocked, has become a home for young prospects to develop and shine. We want the team to bring in talent, but not at the expense of what this organization has been building.

In addition to the team considerations of culture, timeline and needs, we considered the external factors that may play a part in the decision making process. Including a players relationship with their organization and other players in the league.

With these considerations in mind, who are realistic 2024 Knicks free agent targets? This is our top 3 Knicks free agent targets for 2024 at point guard.

Best Knicks free agent targets at point guard

These are the 2024 Knicks free agent targets at the point guard position that are real possibilities for the New York roster.

1. Jrue Holiday

Free agent overview:

2023/24 stats: 13.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 4.6 apg, 45.5 FG%, 41.8 3P%
2023/24 earnings:
 $36,861,707
Career earnings: $222,534,244
Extension eligibility: Through June 30, 2024

Available in free agency via a player option, Jrue Holiday will be targeted by multiple teams. Holiday is known as a defensive stopper at the point guard position. A title that suggests a fit with a Tom Thibodeau led team.

Defense is always a top priority to the Knicks, but it’s time to prioritize offense in New York. Luckily, the Knicks will not need to sacrifice, as he couples his defense with an ability to score the ball. For Holiday’s career, he is an average three point shooter, but efficient from inside the arc. He has improved his playmaking over time and would be a tremendous compliment to Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.

In addition to his play, his championship pedigree and experience would be appreciated on this team. Jrue Holiday, if available, should be the top Knicks free agent target in 2024.

2. D’Angelo Russell

Free agent overview:

2023/24 stats: 16.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 6.1 apg, 48.1 FG%, 41.2 3P%
2023/24 earnings:
 $17,307,693
Career earnings: $140,343,478

D’Angelo Russell has no trouble scoring the basketball and creating his own offense in the NBA. With a career average of 17.6 points per game in the regular season, he can shoot the three, score off the dribble and get his teammates involved.

Russell has also been extremely efficient, shooting over 40% from three during the 2023/24 season. Perhaps a defensive liability, he will be paired with strong defensive talent. The New York Knicks defensive options are many, so they can cover up his deficiencies in this area.

As long as Russell is comfortable with a second unit role, this could be a great Knicks free agent target in 2024.

3. Tyus Jones

Free agent overview:

2023/24 stats: 12.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 6.0 apg, 51 FG%, 42.1 3P% ,75 FT%
2023/24 earnings:
 $14,000,000
Career earnings: $48,846,623

Tyus Jones has proven himself to be a competent point guard in the NBA. He is a savvy shot creator and highly skilled playmaker. With an assist-to-turnover ratio of 6.7, he is a true point guard that takes care of the ball.

After playing the backup role for the Grizzlies and Timberwolves, Jones has taken the starter point guard position in Washington. In a tumultuous year, he has proven he can score efficiently and remain consistent from three with higher volume. With a TS% of 59.6% this year, his basketball IQ and efficiency are highly coveted in the NBA.

For a New York Knicks team that now lacks depth, Tyus Jones could facilitate the offense for the second unit, create his own shot when needed and provide spot minutes with the starters when the offense slumps. He would be a valuable X factor for this team come playoff time.
